KUCHING (April 18): discovery by local scientists identifying palm oil components as a potential source of aircraft fuel has opened up new opportunities for Sarawak in the sustainable aviation industry.
According to the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas), Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the technology is currently being explored by researchers at the Sarawak Biodiversity Centre (SBC) as a basis for producing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
He revealed that scientists in Sarawak have identified a material derived from palm oil, known as palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), which can be used to produce aircraft fuel.
Abang Johari said the development would enable Sarawak to produce its own SAF, with the fuel expected to be supplied for use by AirBorneo and produced in Gedong.
“This is a new technology discovered by our own scientists at SBC, and Sarawak will produce this SAF as part of our move into sustainable aviation,” he said when speaking at the Gedong District Aidilfitri gathering held at the Kompleks Satria Pertiwi on Saturday night.
Abang Johari, who is also Gedong assemblyman, added that the discovery not only maximises the state’s natural resources but also strengthens Sarawak’s position in green technology development and the alternative energy industry.
He noted that the production of new technology-based products is expected to boost the state’s economy while supporting continuous infrastructure development.
At the same event, he presented certificates for the extension of service to Gedong community leaders, as well as certificates of appreciation to former community leaders in recognition of their contributions to society.
Among those present were his daughter Dayang Norjihan, Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Datuk Ir Aidel Lariwoo, and Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee, along with other distinguished guests.
