KUCHING (Oct 25): Sarawak and Japan are set to deepen collaboration in green energy development, stable energy supply, and youth exchange programmes, including student exchanges, according to a report by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).

Japanese Ambassador to Malaysia Shikata Noriyuki said ties between Japan and Sarawak are expected to strengthen under the leadership of Japan’s new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, bringing mutual benefits to both sides.

“Under Prime Minister Takaichi’s leadership, relations between Japan and Sarawak will continue to grow in areas such as stable energy supply, green transition, and youth exchanges, including student programmes,” he said.

Shikata made the remarks after paying a courtesy call on Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) in Kuala Lumpur today.

He said Japan is actively advancing green transition initiatives, including hydrogen-related projects, while continuing the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Bintulu.

“We discussed potential new investment projects from Japan to Sarawak. Of course, this will require closer cooperation between the government and private sectors,” he added.

He also commended Sarawak’s progressive policies under Abang Johari’s leadership, noting that many Japanese companies possess green technology expertise suitable for application in the state.

“In the context of the ‘Asia Zero Emission Community’ (AZEC), Sarawak plays an important role given its growing hydropower capabilities,” he said.

He added that Japan and Sarawak would continue exploring effective approaches to optimise the use of green energy resources toward achieving a low-carbon future for the region.

Also present during the courtesy visit was Deputy Premier and Minister of International Trade, Industry and Investment Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
