KUCHING (Oct 26): Sarawak’s green energy development agenda continues to strengthen its position as an industry leader in the region, with the implementation of various strategic initiatives contributing to the formation of the Asean Energy Grid.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said Sarawak is not merely an energy-producing state, but plays a pivotal role in ensuring regional energy sustainability through cross-border power sharing.

At present, Sarawak supplies 300 megawatts (MW) of energy to West Kalimantan, Indonesia, and 100MW to Sabah.

“We are also planning to supply between 100MW and 150MW of energy to Brunei in the near future,” he said in a Sarawak Public Communication Unit (Ukas) Facebook post.

He made these remarks during the Asean Business and Investment Summit held at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur today.

Meanwhile, during a discussion session titled ‘Energy Transition and the Asean Power Grid – Connecting Markets, Securing Futures’ held in conjunction with the summit, Abang Johari noted that Sarawak is continuing efforts to expand its energy market through discussions with Singapore.

According to him, this would enable Sarawak to supply up to 1 gigawatt of green energy to the neighbouring country.

“This will make Sarawak one of the major players in renewable energy exports in the Asean region,” he said

In addition, the Premier revealed plans to explore the potential for grid connection between Sarawak and the southern Philippines.

He said this is aimed at completing the Borneo power network into the Asean Power Grid by 2035.

“In other words, if this becomes a reality, by 2030 or 2035, we will be able to supply surplus energy to neighbouring countries,” he added.
