MIRI (Sept 11): Sarawak is playing its part in strengthening Asean’s seamless connectivity by developing the Northern Coastal Highway, which will complement the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road 2 (SSLR 2), said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said the RM7.6 billion SSLR 2 project, spanning 335 kilometres across Miri, Limbang, Lawas and Ba Kelalan, will bypass Brunei and significantly improve accessibility in the rural areas of Miri and Limbang divisions.

“In the spirit of co-operation and friendship between Sarawak and the federal government, we will undertake to build these missing links under coastal highway construction for seamless mobility in northern Sarawak.

“This is a vital communication link connecting Sarawak, Sabah and neighbouring Brunei, this is Sarawak’s contribution to Asean where our Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the chair this year,” he said when speaking at the launch of SSLR 2 projects in Nanga Medamit, Limbang today, officiated by Anwar.

Abang Johari added that the state government will also build a road linking Miri to Marudi and Long Terawan, which will connect to SSLR 2 and extend further from Bukit Buda in Ulu Limbang to the Unesco World Heritage Site of Mulu Caves National Park in Baram.

With major transport infrastructure taking shape, he said the state would also channel funds into electricity and water supply development in northern Sarawak to support the region’s growth.

These initiatives, he added, will boost economic activities, particularly in tourism and agriculture, driven by better road connectivity and access.

The Premier also expressed gratitude to Anwar for the federal government’s continued attention to Sarawak’s needs, noting the Prime Minister’s two-day visit across the state as a sign of commitment and sensitivity to local aspirations.
